Will & Fortune is a board game birthed from IML 202, a required Media Arts + Practice course where we collaborate on a semester-long board game project. Will & Fortune critiques the monetization of familial bonds and capitalism, exploring themes of inheritance, greed, and fractured family dynamics through a retro-inspired look.
Process & Creative Approach:
Working with a consistent team over the semester (hi Nikia, Jayloni, and Franklin), I took lead on desgning the game board, developing the color scheme, and crafting the overall visual identity. We drew heavy inspiration from 90s television aesthetics, especially game shows like Wheel of Fortune and the surreal, constructed reality vibe of The Truman Show.

Our story centers on Uncle Jerry, a wealthy, hard-drinking multi-billion dollar game show host who's dying and sends letters to his ungrateful nephews and nieces who like to bump coke and commit tax evasion. The tone is intentionally sharp, irreverent, and unapologetically rude-- reflecting Uncle Jerry's abrasive personality and the cutthroat nature of the game.
Initially in the first few weeks of ideation, we imagined a heartfelt game centered around meaningful connects and love, but the concept took a turn for something... more sinister. The creative process was challenging, but fun, embracing a tongue-in-cheek critique of family, money, and capitalism. All of the late-night taco runs, brainstorming sessions in SCI L106, and endless trial and test runs-- where people would play for two hours straight and steal each other's brownie point-- made this project so worth it in the end. Bonus: Will & Fortune makes for a great drinking game! Especially when players start to make up their own rules later into the night, fully channeling the Uncle Jerry spirit we built into the game.
